Curtains vs. Drapes vs. Draperies

What is the difference between curtains and drapes and draperies?

Curtains and Drapes

What do you call them? curtains? drapes? or draperies? Well I sell window coverings for a living. Believe it or not, sometimes people refer to aluminum venetian blinds as “curtain”. Yup!

Hey! Why is it important? Who cares? They are all window coverings; all serve the same purpose: to provide a barrier between the outside world and your personal space, right? Well I used to be an English teacher before opening this little window treatment store on this lovely island. So, I, like some others, would like to know the difference!

I knew that there’s something wrong with this word ‘drape’ but I wasn’t really sure since English isn’t my first language. I did a bit of research and found out that, yes, ‘drape’ is a verb.

Here’s an example from the book The Secret Life of Bees: “I admired the fancy gold scarf draped over her head”.

But seriously! What’s the difference between these window treatments? Draperies are generally made from heavier fabrics than curtains, and they often have embellishments such as grommets or tiebacks. Curtains are usually lighter in weight and have a simpler design. Light sheers are a good example of curtains.

Drapery can be a great choice if you’re looking to add some extra texture or pattern to your room. They can also be very effective at blocking out light, making them ideal for bedrooms or media rooms. Curtains, on the other hand, tend to be better at filtering light while still allowing some natural light into the room. Sheers can also be equipped with a back layer of lining fabric for more privacy and light control tho, but that’s another story a bit deviating from our discussion here.

Now back to ‘Drapes’ eh! I’d say you are entitled to use this ‘drape’ word however you like to. I still strongly suggest nouns as longer lasting options when it comes to window coverings, tho.

Drape is still a verb, but well, use it as needed as a replacement for draperies or curtains. At least at our store we will sell you all no questions asked. 🙂
